A decade ago, I was completely on board with what was the beginnings of what was later coined as the "woke" movement but now, I'm starting to have my doubts. Don't get me wrong, I feel the conservative option of waging war against it is completely misguided as well. Rather, we need to reflect and see what's working, what's not. For example, a couple of years ago, a professor in California was forced to resign after he tried speaking the Chinese word for "that one" and it sounded like the N-word and he was attacked by an online mob for that as a result. As an ethnic Chinese person, I found this move highly offensive as it violated my culture but I can see how a black person might feel like it was offensive. In cases like this, it's best to find a nuanced middle ground rather than go with the "woke" mob which, despite their best intentions all the time, doesn't always end up offending the least # of people possible. The alternative to woke isn't doing a 180 and going completely anti-work, a la Desantis either. People who subscribe to the "woke" ideology should, every once in a while, reflect where the ideology is going, how its serving society, and maybe make suggestions or even deviate from its mainstream norms if they don't think aspects of it are going in the right direction. After all, that's how an ideology further grows and it's still made leaps and bounds since the 1960s civil rights movement.
