I was your daughter's age in the late 90s. Although smartphones won't be out for another decade, I was hooked on the Internet even though it was only dial-up and there was no social media. I'm not sure if the Internet ended up having as much of a negative experience on me since prior to going online, I was a shy introverted geek who spent all of my time on homework, reading, and video games and literally had no social life. Getting internet access simply meant that I could expand on what I already was doing by, say, searching for homework answers, playing games online, reading articles written around the world, and chatting with other social misfits like me.
