My dad and his entire family lost everything in China’s cultural evolution. He came to the US in 1982 with $500 in his pocket and an offer letter to a PhD program. 30 years later, he retired with over a million. Although he preached about pulling from one’s bootstraps, he seems to have managed to do so and is the poster child of the hard working immigrant who earned the American dream.. Though some critics still claim that he comes from a position of privilege, not of wealth but of an upbringing that valued education so much (otherwise he wouldn’t have received an offer to study in the US which he later leveraged to immigrate here.)
What do you think?
