Self improvement is far from perfect and can be selfish in some circumstances but it's still better than accepting failure (doing nothing) and hoping that our politicians change the system for good.

But yeah, self improvement does have its limitations and I do agree with your sentiments that the self improvement gurus are a bit lacking in diversity: we need more who offer different perspectives, perhaps for those with kids or from less privileged backgrounds. It's sad how so many self improvement bloggers just copy and steal from a few top gurus and try to pass it off as their own; that's probably why there's so little diversity in ideas in the self improvement community right now.
